2016 F1 Season To Start Earlier With New Australian GP Date

The 2016 Formula 1 season will be starting in March after all, with the Australian GP promoters confirming the March 18th to 20th date today.

The new date is two weeks before it was provisionally set for in the FIA calendar on April 3rd. The promoters said they had no issue with moving the dates, so long as it did not clash with Easter Weekend – although it does clash with the second round of the Australian V8 Supercars in Symmons Plains.

V8 Supercars will likely make adjustments to allow for the traditional support race during the F1 weekend, however it does mean that the 21-race calendar next year allows for a greater ‘Summer Shutdown’ period than the two weeks that was being offered to teams in the previous calendar laid out by the FIA in July.
