Alternative Power Unit Given No Support In F1 Commission Meeting

Support for an ‘alternative’ Power Unit specification to be introduced as early as 2017 has been given no support by the Formula 1 Commission.

According to the FIA, in its latest meeting the teams have agreed to look how manufacturers can supply Power Units to teams, cutting the costs, ‘simplification’ of the technical specification, and the noise.

A proposal including these elements will be put forward on January 15th, whilst the option of pursuing the alternative, cheaper Power Unit specification will not be exercised despite support from independent manufacturers such as AER, Ilmor Engineering and Mecachome.

Meetings between the FIA and Power Unit manufacturers will be taking place throughout this weekends Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where it is likely an agreement will be made between the parties regarding the maximum amount of teams they are able to supply engines to.
