Valterri Bottas was complaining about lower back pain midway through Qualifying today, after it was understood that he sustained an injury after going over the high kerbs around Melbourne rather vigorously. According to the team Valterri was taken into the circuit hospital for checks following the incident after he appeared to be getting out of his car and walking along the paddock rather gingerly, without speaking to any member of the media.
“Given my back complaint, we felt it sensible to get checked out at hospital. We await the diagnosis,” said Bottas after coming out of the circuit hospital. According to Rob Smedly along with his mistake on the exit of the final corner, the development of his pain as the session progressed “hindered his ability to set the sort of time he was capable of and had to settle for the third row.”
The team say he will now rest in his hotel tonight and will be checked in the morning by medics before any decision is made for him to race.
