Driving standards have been called into question yet again in FIA Formula 3. After a race was stopped early by race control because it was too dangerous, this time at Spa the future Formula 1 or sportscar stars have repeated the carnage we saw at Monza.
First we saw Kang Ling hit Julio Moreno in a clumsy attempt to pass at the Bus Stop chicane. That brought out the Safety Car, however at the restart the leaders got taken out by Ferrari Academy driver Lance Stroll after weaving in the braking zone of Les Combes into Mikkel Jensen and Felix Rosenqvist. That actually resulted in him receiving a one-race ban
Then later on in the race Gustavo Menezes was pitched into the air by Brandon Maisano, after getting a run on him down the Kemmel Straight. That caused his car to flip violently across the circuit, with the roll hoop breaking as he landed upside down.
The drivers were called to a meeting Saturday evening headed by FIA President Jean Todt, presumably to discuss the driving standards and how they need to be improved. Whilst some drivers have called for the FIA to come down hard on the handful of offenders, we’ll have to wait and see the results at the next event at the Norisring.
