Pierre Gasly secured his fourth pole position in the shootout between him and title rival Antonio Giovinazzi.
The Prema team mates were separated by just under a tenth of a second, despite Gasly going off the track in the closing stages of the session in an attempt to improve on his lap time. It was then that Giovinazzi was able to cut the gap to just 0.082s at the line.
After that the session was red flagged, after Campos driver Mitch Evans spun into the barrier at Turn 1 in what he reported as brake failure over team radio.
With just over three minutes left on the clock, it left enough time for everyone to put on fresh tyres and produce a banker lap. However that was shortly ruined when Nobuharu Matsushita spun at Turn 12 and found the gravel, which scarpered any attempts at improving.
The spin worked in Matsushita’s favour, as it allows him to start behind Sergey Sirotkin in fifth. Sirotkin will start behind Raffele Marciello who rounds out the top three.
