Sebastien Vettel will take a five place grid penalty for a change of gearbox this weekend in Sochi.
This is not due to the issue that caused him to stop during Practice 2 earlier today, but in fact the result of the first-corner contact at the Chinese Grand Prix two weeks ago.
“The driver did finish the last race in Shanghai and this gearbox change was before the six consecutive Events expired,” reads the FIA statement. “Therefore this is not in compliance with Article 23.6a of the 2016 Formula One Sporting Regulations.”
Drivers only have four gearboxes available to them this year, so there is extra emphasis on milage and making sure the parts last for the period they are supposed to.
