Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo will carry 10-place grid penalties into Qualfiying after the pair took their fifth Internal Combustion Engine out of their allocated four today.
“A 5th ICE has been used,” say the stewards. “This is a breach of Article 28.4 a) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. In accordance with Article 28.4 c) a 10 grid position penalty is imposed, as this is the first time a 5th power unit element has been used.”
Red Bull were worried they were going to use a fifth unit as early as Monaco, however the reliability of the Renault engine managed to suffice up until Canada.
Along with Red Bull McLaren will also be taking a combined 50-place grid penalty after both drivers received 25-grid place penalties for changing elements on their Power Unit, which totted up to 20 places before incurring another five for changing his gearbox.
