Daniil Kvyat will remain at Toro Rosso alongside Carlos Sainz in 2017, the team has announced ahead of US GP qualifying.
Kvyat, who started his season at Red Bull and was replaced by Max Verstappen after the Russian Grand Prix, was widely believed to be replaced by current GP2 ace and Red Bull young driver Pierre Gasly. Red Bull recently ran Gasly in Abu Dhabi for a test in a modified 2015 car.
However it seems Red Bull have chosen the continuity route, with this set to be the second full-season for Kvyat with the team having raced with them in 2014. Sainz will also be looking to improve on his impressive form throughout 2017, as Toro Rosso switch to up-to-date Renault engines.
“I’d like to thank Red Bull, Dr. Marko and all the team for their support and the faith they have shown in me since I returned to the team earlier this year,” said Kvyat. “I’m very happy to stay with a team that feels like home to me.”
“In recent races, it has been clear that Daniil is back on top form,” said Toro Rosso team principle Franz Tost. “I always told him that his future with us was in his hands and he has stepped up to the mark and delivered the sort of performances that have ensured his 2017 seat in the STR 12.”
