Jolyon Palmer will contest his final race with Renault in tomorrows Japanese Grand Prix, making way for Carlos Sainz who is set to join the team at Austin.
Palmer confirmed the news on his Instagram account ahead of tomorrows race, stating “With my grid penalty I’ll be starting near the back but I will be giving it my all as always. Thanks everyone for the support over the last two years, it means a lot!”
Toro Rosso duely followed with an announcement, explaining that Daniil Kvyat will rejoin the team at Austin and will pair with Pierre Gasly. “It was previously announced that the Spaniard was due to join his new team for the 2018 season. However, circumstances have changed and therefore we are releasing him earlier than originally planned.”
The team are 10 points ahead of Renault in the current standings, however with Sainz on course to finish the last four races with them that could change should Hulkenberg also continue his current form and cash in points.
“I would like to thank Carlos for all his efforts over almost three Formula 1 seasons,” said team principle Franz Tost. “He always did his very best, demonstrating an excellent attitude and commitment to his work, which helped him and us to get some great results during that time. Therefore, on beh alf of everyone at Toro Rosso, I wish him all the very best with his new team. We look forward to beating him on track!”
